John Barlee Perpetual Shield – Club Team Shield Grades 110, 1, 2 & 3

The Horse Trials discipline across Victoria has undoubtedly been influenced directly by the impact of one of our volunteers, John Barlee, who sadly passed away on 22/02/2022. John, in his life with Pony Club Victoria devoted so much of his volunteer time to assist many clubs across our organisation as well as numerous zones, for more than 60 years.

A resilient and tenacious leader who insisted on a level and standard we all aspire to today; John was able to gather a team of supporters and assistants who shared his high standards of commitment to the tasks necessary to achieve the best results. Mutual trust and respect for each other were pre-requisites for being on John’s core team.

John had a vast input into the lives of so many young riders by ensuring they were well instructed, operating within well-defined rules and riding on safely designed courses, His inclusive approach was to enable all levels of ability to compete with confidence and enthusiasm, and to seek to improve.

John’s dedication to the equestrian industry extended beyond Pony Club, being involved with the Victorian Eventing Committee Melbourne 3-day event, Tooradin Horse Trials, and many other events.  Travelling throughout Victoria John taught and helped in course design, course building and crash crewing.

Throughout his years of services, he became a life member of Berwick Pony Club, Mornington Peninsula Pony Club, Southern Metropolitan Zone, and Pony Club Victoria. More recently John achieved Pony Club Australia Living legends status for his contributions to Pony Club which was presented at Balnarring Pony Club in 2019 in which he was a member until he passed away.

After John’s passing in 2022 Pony Club Victoria dedicated the State Championships Horse Trials Club Teams for Grades 110,1,2 & 3 riders Perpetual Shield in memory, honour and recognition of John’s dedication and influence to Cross-Country course safety.
