The Digestive System

This is a simple view of the horse's digestive tract, showing the various organs involved in digestion.

Digestive system function: The digestive system is responsible for the intake (ingestion and grinding) and subsequent breakdown (digestion and absorption) of foods. The nutrients contained in these foods are utilised for energy, growth, body repair and storage. Digestion takes place through muscular action, enzyme action, and bacterial fermentation. The digestive process is complete when useable nutrients are assimilated and undigested food residues and waste products are excreted.
